A team from Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club(N.A.R.U.F.C.) competed for the Tony Warburton Memorial Golf Trophy last weekend against a Big Club team, captained for the first time by Bobby Kent. Despite some admirable performances by rugby pairs Harry Atkins & Graham Donnely and Dave Pass & Paul McCormack, N.A.R.U.F.C. were unlucky not to retain the cup, albeit after a memorable last hole which was eventually halved. Heroics from Adrian Dawson & Paul Wakefield nearly clinched the trophy, but celebration turned to frustration when both chips failed to hit the safety of the green and ended up in the lake.
The Rugby Club captain Darryl Pettit, who watched helplessly on, saw success turn to disappointment as the impending dropped shots meant curtains for the Rugby Club for another year.
Thanks to all players for yet another fine day's golf and frivolity. Also a mention for Dave McDonald for his efforts as co. captain. Also, Garry Turnbull, 'Brads', Bob Malvern and Jim Cameron.
Finally, sponsorship from Aycliffe Rugby club provided a selection of spot prizes throughout the day.
